No Dogs or Italians Allowed is a heartfelt, magically original stop-motion film about director Alain Ughetto's Italian grandparents who, through trial and error, escaped poverty to find happiness and prosperity in France. With humor and warmth, Ughetto tells the epic story of his family through his grandmother, Cesira.

Genre: Animation
Language: French/Italian/German, subtitles: English

In No Dogs or Italians Allowed, director Alain Ughetto tells the story of his Italian grandparents, who struggle out of poverty to find happiness and prosperity in France. His grandmother Cesira ends up on the mountain because of her love for Luigi, one of 11 children from an Ughetto family. Land is scarce and so is food. So every winter, Luigi and his brothers leave for France and Switzerland to do hard labor. Children are born, new loves are celebrated, wars begin and end, houses are built, and in the meantime, everyone dreams of a better life. Blending personal and broader socio-political history, the film offers an intriguing glimpse into a Europe of the not-so-distant past that still feels like another world.

Combining poetry and realism in an original and personal animation style, filmmaker Alain Ughetto paints a warm, humorous ode to his Italian family and, by interacting with the animated version of his grandmother, creates a new and innovative way to make this story both personal and universal.

This film is recommended by the Film committee because: “It has something that not many films have: You can feel that the director has put his heart and soul into his work. It is an unconventional stop-motion film about heritage, love, pain, and, above all, Italians. All in all, a broad but lovely short story, accompanied by great storytelling and an intriguing visual style”.
