2022 will be remembered as a pivotal year in Iranian history. Following the death of 22-year-old student Mahsa Amini in September, a regime-critical protest wave for women's rights spread across the country, resulting in thousands of imprisonments and hundreds of deaths. What will 2023 bring for Iran and its revolution movement?

Iranians have rebelled many times against the Islamic Republic that was established in 1979, but not often have demonstrations been as massive and outspoken as those of 2022. What is different this time? Research by Ammar Maleki shows that the recent events are only a small part of a larger politico-religious shift taking place in Iran. He uses innovative methods to measure Iranians' public opinions on sensitive socio-political questions.

Dr. Ammar Maleki is a political scientist and an assistant professor at Tilburg Law School, Public Law and Governance department (Tilburg University). His research areas include democratization, cross-cultural research, and public opinions measurement. He is the founder and director of research institute GAMAAN (The Group for Analyzing and Measuring Attitudes in Iran). Being a pro-democracy activist and analyst of Iranian politics, he is frequently invited by media outlets to comment on political debates around democratization of Iran.
