Why do we dress the way we do? How does appearance shape our self-worth and social behavior? And, how is appearance political?

CoronaCheck: This program bears the SG&USE label and is therefore part of education. This means no 1.5 meter of social distancing is required, and no COVID-19 certificate is needed. This program can also be watched online via livestream.

Aynouk Tan is a (fashion) journalist, lecturer and curator specialized in the relationship between appearance, politics and identity. Tan, who describes herself as a queer and intersectional anarchist, will address these questions in a lecture called ‘Fashion and I: How Clothes Produce Identity’. The lecture will be accompanied by a large number of (extravagant) outfits and film clips in order to stimulate critical thinking and analysis.

By observing appearance from an anthropological point of view, Aynouk Tan aims to deconstruct colonial, neoliberal and heteronormative narratives. She is an advisor at the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK), jury member for the Dutch Design Awards, and chair of the board at the political party Amsterdam BIJ1.
