A lively and hopeful portrait of a group of teenage girls about friendship and growing up in the metropolis of London.

Language: English, Dutch subtitles

The British-Nigerian Shola - also called 'Rocks' - is fifteen years old. According to the teachers at school she should start thinking about her future, but she’s mainly concerned with what is going on in her home situation. Her father has passed away and after her mother suddenly left, Rocks started taking care of her younger brother Emmanuel. Fortunately, she is not completely alone; she finds herself surrounded by her friends.

The often-improvised dialogues and inexperienced actresses who are filmed as much as possible in their natural habitat, make the film sometimes come across as somewhat chaotic and unstructured. At the same time this is also where the strength of this film lies.

Film director Sarah Gavron connects with her movie “Rocks” to the Social Realism, just like some of her fellow countrymen, such as the successful Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.  Comparisons with the Belgian Dardenne brothers have also been made. At the IFFR (International Film festival Rotterdam), the film was hailed by press and public.

Reviews

“A fresh, funny coming-of-age story rooted in realistic characters and anchored with a meaningful message, Rocks is as solid as its title suggests.”

Rotten Tomatoes

“Empowering, uplifting teenage girl power.” (5 stars)
