Yes, even Studium Generale goes a little corny and traditional every now and then. Christmas in London, a star-packed cast, tangled love stories and more romantic chaos than any sensible film should attempt. Watching Love Actually has become a holiday ritual for millions. So why not embrace the festive clichés and join us for a cosy evening at the movies? Let's kick off the holiday season together!

This film will be preceded by an introduction.

Genre: romantic comedy, drama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 2 hrs. 15 mins. (2003)

Director Richard Curtis gathered Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley and Bill Nighy for a gloriously overstuffed Christmas rom-com. Its interwoven stories move between new love, heartbreak, grief and friendship, all wrapped in London lights, pop songs and unapologetic sentiment.

More than twenty years later, Love Actually is both a Christmas institution and a film people still love to argue about. Some ideas about romance and gender have dated; its warmth, ensemble storytelling and confidence have not.

Before the screening, film teacher Twan Arts will give a short introduction on why Love Actually became such an enduring Christmas classic, and why its view of love still invites both affection and criticism.

Love it, hate it or quote it: Christmas cinema does not get much more iconic than this.

Awards
Bill Nighy won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. The film received two Golden Globe nominations, for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, and won Best British Film at the Empire Awards.
