Natlab, kastanjelaan 500

When Jacques Dubochet receives the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2017, his life changes. Out of the shadows and into the light, he is suddenly being contacted from all sides. What can he do with his voice, which is now being heard by everyone? How should he, as a ‘nobel citizen’, fulfill his responsibility as a researcher and human being? Then a speech by Greta Thunberg turns everything upside down.

This film is part of InScience Film festival On Tour in Eindhoven. It will take place in Natlab, Kastanjelaan 500 in Eindhoven. Prof.dr. Bert Meijer of the Eindhoven University of Technology will give an introduction about the ceremonies surrounding the Noble Prize and what happens after winning such a prize.

Language: English

The film shows how biophysicist Dubochet repeatedly appears on television, attends scientific events or a book fair. The director accompanies this 75-year-old scientist, recording his everyday life with a camera team. What happens to someone who is suddenly world famous? Dubochet receives numerous invitations every day, he is recognized on the street, teenagers want to take selfies with him. But very few people really understand what Dubochet was actually awarded the Nobel Prize for.

Review
“Citoyen Nobel (Citizen Nobel) is a moving and heartfelt “feel good movie” which reveals the vulnerable side of success and the desperate search for meaning embarked upon by a man who has never stopped fighting.” Cineuropa
