Few films have shaped our image of the vampire as profoundly as Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922). F.W. Murnau’s silent masterpiece, loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, follows Thomas Hutter as he travels to Transylvania to meet the mysterious Count Orlok. What begins as a business trip soon turns into a nightmare.

With its distorted shadows, eerie landscapes and Max Schreck’s unforgettable performance as the pale, rat-like Orlok, Nosferatu became one of the defining works of German Expressionist cinema. More than a hundred years after its release, its images have lost none of their unsettling power.

Wanderwelle performs live
For this special screening, experimental duo Wanderwelle creates the soundtrack live in Filmhuis De Zwarte Doos. Ominous soundscapes, abrasive textures, melodies and electronics merge with Murnau’s images, transforming the silent classic into an intense audiovisual experience.

Wanderwelle consists of Alexander Bartels and Phil van Dulm and operates at the intersection of experimental music, film, photography and installation art. Their work has been presented at venues including Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Carré. Their film The Four Nightmares (2023) was selected for the Dutch Film Festival, while their exhibition Phantasmopolis explored Amsterdam’s haunted past through photography and photomontage.
