What is a good film for you? Learn how to argue why some movies are better than others.
This workshop consists of 3 sessions.
Over the course of three nights we will discuss, amongst others, how best to tackle themes, cinematography, directorship and a little bit of history in film. Knowing the basics of film analysis allows you to understand and appreciate film in new ways. We’ll discuss (at least) two films each night, trying to lay bare their inner workings and relation to other pieces. Each one-and-a-half hour will start with a brief introduction to the films, along with some core pieces of theory to help structure a discussion. The majority of the workshop will consist of watching several parts of the films, some longer than others, and discussing them as a group.
We’ll start off with Drive (2011) and Baby Driver (2017): Two films with as many similarities as differences, with great music, cars, and the modern anti-hero at their core. Followed by Alien (1979) and Prometheus (2012): Another fine pairing, offering us a historic view of filmic authorship and the evolution of the alien in film. We’ll round things off with 28 Days Later (2002) and Children of Men (2006), two mostly British films that can give insights into post-apocalyptic themes and how they deal with the idea that science is dangerous.
The workshops will be led by Brendan Vos, former assistant programmer at Eindhoven’s arthouse cinema. He currently teaches film and television as a freelancer and works on film productions when time allows.
