Theo Jansen is a world-renowned artist, engineer, and visionary futurist. Since the 1990s he has been working on his renowned kinetic sculptures called Strandbeesten (beach animals) – brilliantly engineered walking machines that move on their own in lifelike ways. They are built from tie wraps and PVC piping and get their energy from the wind. From a distance, they look like enormous grazing sheep, but up close, the intricacy of the mechanisms that facilitate their movement is breathtaking.

Jansen sees his Strandbeesten as a new form of life. Throughout the years the animals have evolved into more and more intelligent beings; they can store wind in plastic bottles and – incorporating primitive logic gates – reverse the direction of their movement if their feet are about to get wet. Creating his own universe, Jansen’s aim is to build a whole herd of Strandbeesten, capable of being put out to pasture and left to roam free.

The Strandbeesten of Theo Jansen – Artist of the year 2018 – have been featured all around the world in (solo) exhibitions. He further shares his project and passions through numerous books and talks, which often address topics like creativity, innovation and sustainability.
