How many times a day do you check your online calendar or look at your phone for the time? These days our lives are driven by deadlines, schedules and timetables.
If the seats at the venue on campus are fully booked, you can watch this program live online via the livestream on Facebook or YouTube (You do not need to book a ticket to view the livestream )*
Time and its many divisions (hours, days, weeks, months, and years) have completely shaped our lives and yet we seldom take the time to consider how these concepts arose.
The calendar is inextricably linked to the mechanics of our solar system, and the way in which we describe our periods of time has arisen from ancient speculation in astronomy, mathematics and religion. In this talk, former lecturer of Physics and academic jack-of-all-trades Donna Carroll will provide a brief history of our calendar and an introduction to time measurement. A fascinating field where astronomy, astrology, mathematics, politics, agriculture, superstition and religion all come together. The concept of time is just a human invention, explains Carroll: ‘Humans love order, but there is no order.’
