After thirty years, fighter pilot Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but he must confront the ghosts of his past as he leads the elite TOP GUN graduates on a mission demanding the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it. It’s the long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style.
Genre: action, drama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Set 30 years after its predecessor, the film follows Maverick's return to “Top Gun”, a training program for the United States Navy’s top fighter pilots. Here he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger pilots, including the son of Maverick’s deceased best friend, Lieutenant Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The mission, of course, is impossible, but in this case, it requires “two miracles”.
This film almost single-handedly saved big screen cinemas in the U.S. from going under after the Covid-19 pandemic, and it became the most watched film in cinemas in the Netherlands in 2022. Why? This film was made for the cinema experience, including blasting sound effects and impressive “real flight” stunts. Yes, the American Army lent them some of their material as the last Top Gun film created a huge influx of new recruits. Surprisingly tough, this film may also bring a few tears to your eyes (don’t worry, we won’t tell a soul) as the plot and soundtrack will move you and the seriously ill Val Kilmer makes a brief return to play the role of “Ice-man”. A Top Gun sequel would not be complete without him. If you still need an extra reason to come see this film in Filmhuis De Zwarte Doos, the adrenaline rush that the action scenes provoke will get you all pumped up for your upcoming exams.
This film is recommended by SG student assistant Sverre because: “This sequel to the classic Top Gun has finally been created with incredible sound effects, real-life stunts and an enticing plot. It's a kid's dream brought back to life for the old and new generations!"
"... A summer blockbuster of the old school, with rust-bucket F-14s duking it out with young pups in F-18s, all shot on celluloid rather than sketched in by computers, at the behest of a star who refuses to quit.” The Times, UK.
“The breathless, gravity and logic-defying “Top Gun” sequel.” Roger Ebert.com
“Top Gun: Maverick offers exactly the kind of air-punching spectacle that reminds people why a trip to the cinema beats staying at home and watching Netflix.” The Guardian.
“There’s no reason in the world it should have worked, but it does.”Robs Movie Vault
The film won an Oscar for ‘Best sound’ and a whole bunch of other awards for cinematography, Best song by Lady Gaga, Best stunts, Best action movie for the big screen and more.
