A traumatic event — a suicide attempt — creates a rift in the family’s everyday life. Their lives fundamentally change, as if they are waging a war invisible to everyone else. The story is autobiographical; it is addressed in the film and highlighted by the fact that the author/director plays himself.

Genre: Drama
Language: Croatian, subtitles: English

The film begins with Bruno breaking down the door of his brother’s apartment and finding Damir suffering from severe self-inflicted injuries. Damir is taken to the hospital and put in a room to rest. His mother arrives from their former home in Split and, together with Bruno, she tries to figure out what to do next to help her son in this acute mental health crisis.

Safe Place is an intense film which immediately takes you into the panic and horror of a family dealing with the unthinkable. You can feel the pain in every scene. Director Juraj Lerotic based the film on his own experiences and consistently finds strong angles and compositions that make Safe Place a compelling visual experience.

Safe Place is recommended by the Studium Generale Student Film Committee because it shows the devastating impact of a controversial topic in a respectful and especially human manner.

Please note: This film contains intense and heavy scenes that may cause (or evoke) strong emotional reactions.

"A tense psyhological drama that treats its serious topic from a sincere point of view.” Cineuropa
