Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is Stanley Kubrick's razor-sharp political satire, widely regarded as one of the greatest film comedies of all time. At the height of the Cold War, U.S. General Jack Ripper loses his mind and sends a large number of planes into the Soviet Union to nuke the country. The American president arranges a meeting with his advisors, where he learns from the Soviet ambassador that if the weapons are fired, an automatic device will be triggered that will destroy all life on Earth. So the task is to recall the planes, which will be difficult since no one knows the correct communication codes.

Peter Sellers steals the show in no fewer than three roles: the U.S. president, a British captain, and, of course, the dubious German scientist (and barely reformed Nazi) Dr. Strangelove.

This movie was originally intended to be a dramatic look at the Cold War (loosely based on the novel Red Alert by Peter George), but Kubrick felt it would be more effective as a satire. Watch it if you want to see a true comedic masterpiece. Kubrick's Cold War satire is as funny and razor-sharp today as it was in 1964.

This film is recommended by the Studium Generale Film committee because: “It’s a satirical classic from Kubrick that doesn’t feel old at all. Even though it is in black and white, it manages to set up hilarious and thoughtful situations that were critical on the cold war and are still very relevant!”

Please Note: The film is in English with Dutch subtitles. Although there are a few minor sentences spoken in Russian, it won't be an issue if you don't understand them.

This film will be preceded by an introduction by film teacher Twan Arts.

Awards
At the Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Peter Sellers), Best Director, and Best Writing. It also won 4 BAFTA’s and was nominated for three.

Reviews
“Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove remains perhaps the blackest comedy ever put on screen, and with Peter Sellers brilliantly playing multiple roles, the blackest, funniest movie of the post-war era.Time

“A masterpiece... The genius of Dr. Strangelove is that it's possible to laugh -- and laugh hard -- while still recognizing the intelligence and insight behind the humor.”  ReelViews
