De Zwarte Doos, room 1.04
Price: € 5.00 incl. vat (Student)

Join philosopher Lisa Doeland as she delves into the topics of apocalypse and extinction. Explore philosophical perspectives on mortality and ecological catastrophe, discovering how to confront the mess we leave behind and live meaningfully amidst extinction. And since you can't think well on an empty stomach; come and eat some fries and sharpen your thinking at this second edition of our greasy philosophy workshop.

In our Philosophy and Fries workshop series, we invite a philosopher to campus to enlighten your mind while you indulge in fried goodies. Once both your body and your brain have been fed, you and your fellow students will be able to approach philosophical topics with a fresh perspective.

Apocalypsophy
In this second edition of Philosophy and Fries, philosopher Lisa Doeland MA helps you think about the apocalypse and extinction.  After all, philosophy is about learning to die, as Socrates and Montaigne, among others, have argued. In times of ecological catastrophe, however, we need not only to learn to die, to deal with mortality, but also to learn to die out, to deal with (mass) extinction. What can philosophy teach us about extinction?

Life inevitably involves loss, decay, and waste – if you live, you inevitably get your hands dirty and leave an ecological footprint. Lisa Doeland argues that there is no point in dreaming of a world where everything is tidied up, cleaned up, and solved. Instead, we need to face the mess we leave behind and learn to live with it. Fortunately, Lisa offers tools for living in times of extinction. The key is to ask ourselves how we can die out in the best way possible.
