Musical masterpieces? There is Canto Ostinato….. and the rest. Unique line up: 1 grand piano, 2 marimbas, 2 vibraphones and you forgetting the here and now.

Music for a meditative mood

Canto Ostinato is more than a musical piece. Simeon ten Holt’s most famous composition is an Experience with capital E. The Canto has that rare quality that makes different and diverse people experience the work as ‘theirs’. Even in such a manner that it can be life changing, as the much praised documentary by Ramon Gieling shows. And to even better ‘understand’ the work, marimba player Maikel Claessens will give a short lecture on the musical piece. And yep, that’s right, you read it correctly: a marimba player. Because not only the piece is quite unique, being one of the most hypnotic works of all times, the line-up of this concert is even more so: 1 grand piano, 2 marimbas, 2 vibraphones and you… forgetting the here and now.

Ivo Janssen & Mallet Collective Amsterdam

Ivo Janssen performed the Canto solo numerous times. Just one grand piano was the minimal setting in Simeon ten Holt’s view. But even more so is the Canto a piece full of freedom. Tonight’s performers consist besides Ivo Janssen out of the Mallet Collective Amsterdam. Two vibraphones and two marimbas give a whole different colour to the Canto, a composition which lives and moves and meanders more than any other work.
