Lauded by many critics as the best film of 2021, The Power of the Dog is an a-typical Western that explores what it means to be a man.

The film will start at 19:30 (door opens at 19.15) and there will be an introduction.

Language: English – subtitles: Dutch

The Power of the Dog is based on the 1967 novel bearing the same name by Thomas Savage. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Doctor Strange) plays Phil Burbank: a cruel 1920's cowboy who owns a successful ranch. Much of the movie revolves around his relationship with his brother George, George's new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Peter -- to all of whom, Phil is a complete jerk. But then Phil starts taking Peter under his wing. Is he finally showing his softer side, or is this the plot twisting further into menace?

Director Jane Campion, widely regarded as one of the best female directors alive, takes the Western genre with its archetypical masculine cowboys, and spins it around in unexpected ways. You won’t see any shoot-outs in this movie. But there’s an almost horror-like tension that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Though you might have seen this film pop up on Netflix, we highly recommend you watch it on our big screen. Otherwise, if you watch the film on your laptop, it’s easy to miss the subtle clues that Campion inserts hinting at the sick plot twist at the end. And what’s maybe even more important: the cinema will give you the best chance to emerge yourself in the beautiful vast landscapes in which the story is set.

Awards

  • Jane Campion won Director of the Year at the Palm Springs International Film Festival of 2021. And the Silver Lion at the Venice Film festival for Best director.
  • The film also won several awards for Cinematography and (adapted) screenplay and is a great favorite amongst critics.
  • According to the Boston Online Film Critics Association the film deserves almost all of the important prizes including: Best Picture, Best Director (Jane Campion), Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst), Best Screenplay (Jane Campion), Best Cinematography (Ari Wegner).

Reviews:

  • Nothing short of Extraordinary. (*****) The Times.
  • Here, coiled like a predator in wait, Cumberbatch is perhaps more fearsome than as his deep-voiced villains in “The Hobbit” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” He moves through the movie like an unsheathed knife, cutting anyone unlucky enough to get close Roger Ebert.
  • A bold visual stylist, Campion introduces this world and its people with sweep and precision, with soaring eagle-eye aerial shots and her characteristic attention to voluptuary detail (and with New Zealand doubling for an unspoiled Montana). New York Times.
