Time magazine named ‘the protester’ Person of the Year 2011. The Arab Spring, Occupy, protests against retrenchments by governments , people from Tunis, Cairo, Madrid, Athens, New York, Moscow and dozens of other cities and towns all over the world took to the streets to protest against the establishment. They are disillusioned and discontented with political and financial systems. Sociologist Jacquelien van Stekelenburg (VU University Amsterdam) compares these different protest movements and discusses what motives people to take action. What makes a protest movement successful?
