In our ever globalizing economy, human rights are under pressure. Nicola Jägers, professor of International Human Rights Law, discusses the responsibilities, obligations and also negligence of companies in today's global context.

Unacceptable working conditions in clothing factories in Bangladesh; environmental issues in the Niger Delta; ICT companies facing the censorship of governments in China and Turkey; in current times of globalizing economies and markets the respect for and protection of human rights and the environment is under pressure. Even the Dutch energy transition in some cases results in human rights violations. Although more and more companies are paying attention to this issue, for many it is still not a top priority. And also within our own national borders, labor market discrimination is still a problem that needs to be addressed.

Would you like to work for a company that doesn’t have an eye for human rights and/or causes damage to the environment?

On Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 March the students organization Wervingsdagen, the organizer of various career events at TU/e, organizes their yearly Career Expo (TU/e Campus, Auditorium). A two day event during which 150+ companies – potential employers for students – present themselves. When you get in touch with a representative of a company, why not ask about their human rights policy?

Prof.dr.mr. Nicola Jägers holds the chair in International Human Rights Law at the Law School of Tilburg University. She is also Commissioner at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, the official Dutch NHRI of the United Nations.
