The challenge of complexity sold out

Prof.dr. Alfio Quarteroni
Wednesday, October 24 2012, 11:45 AM - 1:00 PM (sold out)
Blauwe Zaal Auditorium

The numerical solution of complex physical problems requires appropriate mathematical models and accurate numerical methods. Often the numerical problem is so large that it becomes untractable.

Prof.dr. Alfio Quarteroni (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale, Lausanne / Politecnico di Milano, Milan) demonstrates a multi-faceted strategy aimed at simplifying the original mathematical model, devising novel numerical approximation methods, and developing efficient parallel algorithms that exploit the dimensional reduction paradigm. By combining these approaches an impossible calculation can be made possible. This can be illustrated by cases in point such as blood flow modeling, environmental modeling, and sports design.
