Pain seems straightforward. Touch a hot stove, twist an ankle, get a headache: something hurts. But pain is far more mysterious than most of us realize. People can experience severe pain without visible injury, while others have serious tissue damage and feel almost none at all. Pain researcher dr. Esmeralda Blaney Davidson dives into the complexity of pain and explores the science behind something we all experience.

Pain shapes our lives. It tells us when something is wrong, influences our behavior, and can profoundly affect our wellbeing. Yet scientists are still uncovering how pain actually works.

Join pain researcher and The Pain Book co-author Esmeralda Blaney Davidson for a journey through one of biology's greatest puzzles. Learn how the brain, immune system and body work together to create pain, why chronic pain develops, and why no two people experience pain in exactly the same way. This lecture offers a fresh perspective on something we all know intimately but rarely stop to question.

Dr. Esmeralda Blaney Davidson is an Associate Professor at Radboudumc in Nijmegen. This year, she and her colleague Hans Timmerman published Het Pijn Boek (The Pain Book), in which they explore the science behind pain and answer many questions about it.
