Plato said that ‘music is the medicine for the soul”, but can music also be a real medicine for your physical condition? Let’s find out and listen to the doctor.

In the ‘Minds on Music’ lecture series, we look at music from a different scientific perspective. Today, you will hear Dr. Markus Klimek reflect on music as a medicine.

When you are in love, you listen to different music than when you are suffering from a broken heart. So, it comes as no surprise that there is a connection between your state of mind and the music you listen to. But can music also be healing when you've just had surgery, for example? Or can it even replace the use of certain medications? And does it always have to be gentle classical music, or can loud EDM be blown out of the speakers as well?

The mission of the research team of "Music as Medicine" is to introduce music as a new treatment in health care, but this cannot be done without scientific evidence. The team is therefore studying the effects of listening to music before, during and after surgery, and has found that patients experience significantly less pain, stress and anxiety. People who go into surgery relaxed often come out better. Can music be used as medicine to save more lives?

Dr. Markus Klimek is deputy department head and trainer in anesthesiology at Erasmus MC. Klimek is also the research coordinator for "Music as Medicine". Patient comfort and safety are paramount in his clinical and scientific work.
