EU Elections: Why You Should Vote

Dr. Adina Akbik
Wednesday, June 5 , 12:40 PM - 1:20 PM
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Price: Free (Student) Free (Others)

From the Green Deal and farmers' protests to the war in Ukraine and the threat to democratic rights in some EU countries, there are plenty of reasons to vote on June 6. Dr. Adina Akbik from Leiden University will explain European politics and the issues at stake in these elections.

Even if you don't interfere with the EU, the EU will interfere with you. The world is globalized, decisions have many international consequences, so it is essential to look beyond the borders of your own country. It is time to understand what is going on in the EU, especially in the turbulent times we live in. If you have a vision of where the EU should and should not go, now is the time to act: on June 6, a new European Parliament will be elected. In this lecture, Dr. Adina Akbik will explain European politics and the issues at stake in these elections.  So, use this lunch break to find out what to look out for when it comes to voting.

Dr. Adina Akbik is Senior Assistant Professor of European Politics at Leiden University. Her research focuses on European Union (EU) governance from both a political science and a public administration perspective. Her recent work examines the enforcement powers of EU agencies, political accountability through the European Parliament, and drivers of behavior within EU institutions more generally. In 2023, Adina was awarded an ERC Starting Grant for a project studying the role of cultural stereotypes in EU governance.
