Ancestors is a large-scale immersive experience where technology, collective storytelling, and reflection come together. You’ll take part as a group, each guided by your own smartphone, as you create a virtual family lineage spanning generations. It all starts with a selfie — your face is blended with someone else’s to create a child of the future. As the story unfolds, you’ll step into the roles of parent, grandparent, and eventually ancestor, watching your digital family tree grow.
But Ancestors is about more than just creating avatars. Together with your fellow (great-)grandparents, you’ll face critical decisions shaping the world your descendants will inherit. From climate change to social dilemmas — what choices will you make, and how will they impact the future of humanity?
Practical information
Make sure to bring a fully charged smartphone. During the experience, you’ll also be asked to take and share a selfie as part of the performance.
The Smartphone Orchestra
This program is a creation of The Smartphone Orchestra. They create interactive group-experiences where audiences connect through their smartphones. Their work has been featured at theaters, universities, conferences, and festivals like Lowlands and SXSW.
