In this film classic, Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis play outlawson a, by chance, desperate flight through the Southwest. With a determined detective (Harvey Keitel) on their trail, a very good-looking hitchhiker (Brad Pitt in his first role) in their path, and a string of crimes in their wake, their journey alternates between a super-fast ride and a powerful personal odyssey. This film will be preceded by an introduction.

Genre: Adventure / Crime / Drama
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch

Thelma and Louise is the story of two friends going away for the weekend. Louise Sawyer is a sharp-tongued worldly wise woman waiting tables in a diner in Arkansas and housewife Thelma Dickinson is married to disrespectful and controlling carpet salesman Darryl.

On the way to a cabin in the mountains, they stop at a roadhouse bar, where Thelma dances with a flirtatious stranger, Harlan. He takes her to the parking lot and tries to rape her until Louise intervenes. This incident spirals the two women into a roller coaster of events where they end up not only running from the police, but also for their lives.

This film is considered a landmark in Hollywood’s portrayal of women characters and has been hailed as one of the best road movies of all time! But the film is more than just a road movie about two women taking a wrong turn. It alternates between drama, action and comedy. It is funny, despite the weight of some of its storylines and packed with powerful scenes where not everything is explained, but enough is clear to understand how these women ended up where they are. And on top of that, the cinematography works best on the big screen including some beautiful shots of the Grand Canyon. The ending of the film remains iconic and is still frequently referred to in other films.

Please note: this film contains some violent scenes including a near rape.

Awards
The screenplay won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe (best original screenplay).Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon were both nominated for best actress for several awards including the Oscars. It is very uncommon for two actresses to be nominated for a leading role in the same film.
