Wes Anderson’s Palme D’Or winner of 2021, The French Dispatch, has all the ingredients to make you want to go back to the cinema.

Language: English – subtitles: Dutch

The French Dispatch is a tongue-in-cheek homage to famous weekly magazine The New Yorker. Director Wes Anderson tells the story of the outgoing editorial team of an American weekly journal in a fictitious French city; the three best stories in the magazine come to life. Featuring an all-star cast including Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Benicio del Toro and Elisabeth Moss.

Oscar-winning production designer Adam Stockhausen had to create 130 film sets in the small town of the fictitious city Angoulême. Stockhausen told the Hollywood reporter that  Wes Anderson’s style of directing is not only about the color choices and the layout of the objects, but also about the lens he chooses and the way the cameras move. He likes arranged symmetrical frames and has a sharp eye for details.

We can assure you: the look and feel of the film comes to life best when watched on the big screen.

Awards

  • Wes Anderson was nominated for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021.
  • The movie was also nominated to win the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Score in a Feature Film in 2021.

Reviews

  • “The films of Wes Anderson, with their intricately layered details and fanatically meticulous design, almost invariably reward a second viewing”. The Guardian.
  • “Flipped through and sectioned off magazine-style, The French Dispatch feels unusually busy, with everything Anderson’s learned how to do over the course of his career culminating across the movie’s four episodes (five, counting the frame story). Every chapter is a feast.” Rolling Stone.
