We're learning more and more about the world around us. But the patch of earth right beneath our feet remains a mystery to many. This documentary is about to change that.

Genre: nature documentary
Language: Dutch, subtitles: English
Length: 1h 23m.

It’s strange, really, how little many of us know about the ground directly beneath us, especially considering it forms the foundation of life on Earth. Soil plays a crucial role in purifying water, storing carbon, and recycling nutrients. A healthy soil ecosystem is essential for sustainable food production and a powerful ally in the fight against climate change.

In just one teaspoon of healthy soil, more living organisms exist than there are people on Earth. It’s a fascinating world of roots, worms, fungi, and bacteria, right beneath our feet, yet largely unseen. And so, the creators of The New Wilderness and Wild Amsterdam went underground: what kind of life hides in our soil? You’ll find out in the captivating nature documentary Onder het Maaiveld (Planet Soil).

It takes you on a mesmerizing journey into the microscopic world below. We follow a group of city dwellers who start an experiment on a patch of farmland outside the city: transforming it into a vegetable garden. Suddenly, animals, birds, and insects begin to return, not just to the garden, but to the entire area.

Reviews
“The balance between bite-sized facts (like the exact size of a ciliate), underlying connections (such as the impact of a changing climate), and nature documentary-style entertainment (with visual animations and a soundtrack full of bouncy and buzzing sound effects to emphasize the underground bustle) is simply spot on.” De Volkskrant ****

“The film brings underground life to center stage with stunning camera techniques.” New Scientist
