Dive beneath the surface with Sir David Attenborough as he explores the beating blue heart of our planet. From dazzling coral reefs to the vast open ocean, this breathtaking documentary reveals both wonder and fragility of marine life, and why hope for our future lies beneath the waves.

Wonder, awe, and optimism, come to Filmhuis De Zwarte Doos and dive in.

Genre: nature documentary (2025)
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 1hr 35 mins.

The celebrated broadcaster and filmmaker Sir David Attenborough (1926) reveals how his life coincided with the great era of ocean discovery. Using spectacular images of coral reefs, kelp forests, and the open ocean, Attenborough explains why a healthy ocean keeps the entire planet stable and thriving.

Beautiful, compelling images show the wonder of underwater life and reveal the reality and challenges facing our ocean in an unprecedented way, from destructive fishing techniques to the mass bleaching of coral reefs. Yet the story is one of optimism, with Attenborough pointing to inspiring stories from around the world to convey his most important message: the ocean can recover to a glory beyond anything anyone has ever seen.

Reviews
“Attenborough matches the natural world’s grandeur with his own intellectual and moral seriousness.” The Guardian

“Vast ships drag chains across the ocean floor … Roughly 25 percent of fish caught are actually kept and sold. All this information is delivered without hyperbole … concludes with significant notes of hope … we’re not quite sunk yet.” Time Out
