“The only truth is love beyond reason’’, is a quote by French poet Alfred de Musset that opens the Canadian drama comedy Les amours imaginaires (English: Heartbeats). It’s a truth that’s totally embraced by the lead roles in the film.

A year after his successful debut J’ai tué ma mère (English: I killed my mother), director Xavier Dolan, who’s only 21, has come up with a new story about the friends Francis and Marie, who are both in love with Nicolas. In the resulting three-way relationship, the focus is on the experience of being in love, including all the uncontrollable feelings that brings with it. With some intimate photography, spectacular slow motion scenes and a colorful mise en scène, Dolan creates a style that’s both consistent and distinctive.
