The title of the film suggests the worst (either education or flat entertainment), but the opposite is true, for How To Have Sex is as poignant as it is subtle. It revolves around the cheerful Tara, who goes to a Greek holiday village with her two "besties" to drink, club and lose her virginity. Her cheerfulness will fade, but how exactly is never predictable or implausible.

Genre: drama
Language: English,  subtitles: Dutch

Best holiday. Ever! Final exams are over and to celebrate, Tara heads off to Crete with her two best friends. Drinking, dancing and flirting, the girls move from club to pool party in search of adventure, unforgettable nights and freedom. The pressure to have sex is intense, especially for Tara, who is the only one in the group with no experience. But what should be the best vacation of their lives changes when Tara's boundaries are carelessly crossed. How To Have Sex is a movie about growing up and the vulnerability of young people when faced with transgressive behavior and peer pressure.

In her energetic, powerful and confrontational debut feature, British director Molly Manning Walker shows how important the conversation about consent still is.

Please note: How to Have Sex deals with issues such as sexually transgressive behavior and sexual violence. Have you seen or experienced something? The Sexual Violence Hotline (phone number 0800 - 0188) is there for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced sexual violence. Anyone can call and chat safely and anonymously.

The Student Film Committee recommends this film because: “It truthfully depicts issues of casual sex relationships and their potentially destructive effects on young people’s mental health, coupled with the anxiety about maturing and the future.”

Awards
Since premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard prize, How To Have Sex has gone on to win numerous awards, including one for Mia McKenna-Bruce's stunning performance as Tara.

Reviews
“This is an interestingly unsentimental film, without the coming-of-age cliches, and one from which the three leads emerge stronger and happier than before.” The Guardian

“If you have an idealized memory of your teenage years, see this movie to remember what it was actually like.” San Francisco Chronicle

“How to Have Sex is a stressful and infuriating watch because its arc isn’t reserved for fictional characters. Instead, it serves as the jumping point for bigger conversations that are all too common, timely as they are heartbreaking.” The Globe and Mail
