What if something unseen is circling just beneath the surface? In Jaws, a quiet seaside town is thrown into panic as a great white shark turns everyday life into a nerve-racking waiting game. With its iconic score, slow-building tension, and sharp eye for human behavior, this is more than just a thriller; it’s a film that still grips audiences nearly 50 years later.

When Jaws premiered in 1975, it didn’t just scare audiences, it reshaped cinema. Directed by Steven Spielberg, regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers, this seemingly simple story of a great white shark terrorizing a small coastal town became the blueprint for the modern blockbuster.

Set in a small seaside town under threat from a great white shark, Jaws explores not only fear of the unknown, but also how people respond under pressure. The contrasting characters each face danger in their own way; through caution, curiosity, and obsession. Beneath the suspense, Jaws also raises lasting questions about our relationship with nature. Is the shark a monster, or simply a force beyond our control?

Before the screening, film teacher Twan Arts will give a short introduction, sharing why this film remains such a powerful and influential classic.

Awards
Jaws won Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound at the 48th Academy Awards. It was also nominated for Best Picture.

Reviews

“It is a thriller, according to the classic distinction, of surprise rather than suspense. You feel like a rat, being given shock treatment, who has not yet figured out what to do to call off the buzzers.” Village Voice

“‘Jaws’ is a great adventure movie of the kind we don’t get very often any more.” Roger Ebert

“There isn't an ounce of dead wood in it; it is the sum total of thousands of 'effects' (special and otherwise) tested and tuned to produce the desired response in the audience. Jaws is a landmark of modem cinematic engineering.” Sight and Sound
