Action, drama

Purely by chance, prison officer Juan is knocked unconscious in an accident and awakens in the middle of a chaotic riot in cell block 211. He instantly knows what he has to do to survive: taking off his uniform, he pretends to be a new prisoner. Then he gets into a fight with the riot leader Malamadre over his place in the pecking order.

The Spanish film Cell 211 won eight Goyas, the Spanish film prize, including best film, best director and best starring role. As well as an exciting thriller it’s also a political film about the terrible conditions in the Spanish jails, the hypocrisy of those in power, and the sensitive status of (Basque) ETA members in the penal system.
