Good novels don’t help us escape the world, they help us live in it. Join this magical evening with Hetty Zock (professor of Psychology of Religion) to learn all about the enduring popularity of the Harry Potter universe.

It’s been 22 years since the first publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but the magical universe created by J.K. Rowling continues to draw people in till this day. Is it due to the creative storytelling or the colorful characters? The exciting adventures, witty writing or relatable growing up phases?

Author J.K. Rowling was inspired by many historical sources and traditions, drawing from a range of cultures and mythologies from the Bible to Science Fiction. She touches upon universal themes like relationships, coping with fear and anxiety, finding your own identity and all the issues that come along with it. This evening, Prof. Hetty Zock will analyze Harry Potter’s success, and in particular, show how Rowling’s books can help readers find their own way around life’s questions.

Prof. dr. Hetty Zock is professor of Psychology of Religion at the University of Groningen, with a special interest in the domain of spiritual care. She is an admirer and long-time studier of J.K. Rowling’s work.
