Data Dilemmas in Smart Cities

Tom van Arman and others
Tuesday, March 17 , 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Price: Free (Student) Free (Others)

Smart cities are developing rapidly, transforming the ways in which people, services and technologies connect, interact and are monitored. Joined by experts in smart cities, privacy, and ethics, we will explore current implementations and future scenarios and discuss both the benefits these systems offer and the risks they pose to personal privacy and other living standards.

Smart cities promise a future of smooth, efficient services and infrastructure, a safe society and a more sustainable urban life. By using the data generated by residents and users to power everything from transport to energy, these technologies could help solve some of the biggest challenges of city living.

But behind these seemingly progressive smart technologies are profound ethical dilemma’s and many unknowns. It is becoming increasingly difficult to walk the streets of any Dutch city without being monitored, tracked and sometimes even nudged. Those living in smart cities risk experiencing increased inequality and unwanted exposure. How do we balance the convenience of a connected city with the basic right to privacy? And can laws and regulations keep up with the rapid development of AI and smart technologies?

In this interactive session, we bring together experts in smart cities, law, ethics, and data collection to explore what this future could really mean. Together, we will uncover how these changes affect our daily lives and what we should demand from the cities of tomorrow. Are we comfortable with the amount of data that the future city will require from us?

Tom van Arman is the founder of Tapp, an award-winning smart city design agency that empowers local governments and citizens to build the inclusive, responsive, and sustainable cities of the future. As a strategist and developer of civic technologies, he has collaborated with forward-thinking urban innovators like the City of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Smart City, and the Amsterdam Economic Board.

Other speakers will be announced soon.

The discussion will be moderated by Jan Willem Wesselink (NPO Radio 1).
