“Laat je horen! / Speak Up!" is an encouragement to express yourself, firmly believing that your unique sound deserves recognition. Whether conveyed through words, vocalizations, or the power of music, this sentiment holds true. Yet, not everyone has always had the opportunity to make their voice heard. In classical music, for example, women have long stood at a disadvantage. The Dutch Student Orchestra ‘24 is addressing this imbalance, and thus their theme for this year is "Let yourself be heard!"

TU/e students, PhD's and EngD's can use a special SG discount code and pay only €5.00 for a ticket. Read more below.

The Dutch Student Orchestra will perform a commissioned composition by Sílvia Lanao, in which she arranges songs by Alma Mahler performed by soprano Lilian Farahani. Alma was a musically ambitious young composer who, at the age of 18, wondered why women had not achieved anything in music. She wanted to change that. But when Gustav Mahler asked her to marry him, he forbade her to compose again. She agreed and gave up her musical career. Alma was then silenced, while the composer commissioned by the NSO 2024 is now making her music heard.

The theme 'Let yourself be heard!' also refers to Mahler's Symphony No. 5-- although it is hard to believe, given the “love contract” between Gustav and Alma, that the two composers had a great love for each other. The fourth movement of Mahler's Fifth Symphony, the Adagietto, is a love letter to Alma. He could not express his love for her in words, but only in music.

With a female soloist, a female commissioned composer, and a central role for Alma Mahler's songs in the commissioned composition, the Netherlands Student Orchestra supports the most needed emancipation of women in classical music.

  • Sílvia Lanao Aregay – commissioned composition
  • Mahler – Symphony no. 5
