When Love Isn’t Love: Unmasking Coercive Control

Mr. drs. Ariane Hendriks
Woensdag 6 mei , 12:40 - 13:40
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Prijs: Gratis (Student) Gratis (Anderen)

A relationship can seemingly start off very romantic, but it doesn’t always stay that way. Some partners turn out to be extremely controlling and manipulative. In this lecture, we look at the steps that lead up to and define coercive control; a form of domestic violence that, if not recognized properly, can sometimes have deadly consequences.

The lecture ends at 13:40. It is not possible to leave the room earlier.

Coercive control (in Dutch: intieme terreur), which can include physical, psychological and sexual abuse, is characterized by an imbalance of power between partners or ex-partners. The controlling partner — in most cases a man — exerts coercion and control over their partner (usually a woman). They may for example push to move in together quickly, insist on sharing finances right away, and gradually cut their partner off from friends and family. Patterns of isolation and intimidation slowly limit the personal freedom of the victim, until they are completely under the perpetrator’s control.

Perpetrators of coercive control often go to great lengths to keep their partner trapped in the relationship. Being able to recognize early warning signs, such as love bombing and gaslighting, can help to prevent this pattern from escalating into its most serious form: femicide.

Mr. drs. Ariane Hendriks worked as a family law attorney for seventeen years. Frustrated with the way in which the judicial system deals with domestic violence cases, she changed course and switched to academia. At Tilburg University, she is now educating a new generation of lawyers, teaching them how to recognize what is often overlooked: intimate partner abuse. Together with her colleague Ingrid Vledder, she published a book on the subject last year: Met liefde heeft het niets te maken.
