Victims of international crimes such as genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity have rights; think of rights to participate in trials, right to reparation, and the right to know the truth. However, practice shows it is very difficult to access these rights when we are confronted with mass victimization. According to Rianne Letschert, the justice system fails these victims of international crimes.
Prof.dr. Rianne Letschert discusses various examples from practice and also the main challenges. For instance, dealing with vulnerable groups such as children, or determining who is a victim or a perpetrator in times of war and conflicts. Furthermore, how can it be that some people are resilient and others need professional victim support? And lastly, how can governments and international organisations provide relief to victims of international crimes?
Prof.dr. Rianne Letschert (@rianneletschert) is professor in Victimology and International Law at the International Victimology Institute Tilburg (INTERVICT), Tilburg University. She works on victims’ rights and human security issues and specializes in mass victimization, the large numbers of victims caused by war crimes. In 2013, she was appointed to the Royal Young Academy of Sciences.
