Vincent van Gogh is probably the world's most famous Dutch painter. But did you know he painted one of his best-known works just 5 kilometers from our campus? Join Franka Blok to discover Van Gogh's Brabant roots, the stories behind his famous paintings and how he became a global icon.

In 1883, Van Gogh arrived in Nuenen, a village just outside Eindhoven. He spent two incredibly productive years there, studying, drawing and painting the people and landscapes around him. Farmers, weavers and the Brabant countryside became his subjects. It was an important period in his artistic development, long before the bright colours and expressive brushstrokes we now associate with his work.

But how did a struggling artist from Brabant become one of the most influential painters in history? What drove his creativity, how did his style develop and and what role did his close relationship with his brother Theo play in his life?

In this lecture, Franka Blok, who studies van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, takes us through his fascinating life and work. From his early years in the Netherlands to his groundbreaking use of color and expression such as Sunflowers, we’ll explore the story of an artist who changed the course of modern art.

After the lecture, you're welcome to stay for an informal extra session with Franka in room 2.08 om Auditorium, where she'll share more about her research and answer your questions.
