Imagine simulating astronomical black holes on an electronic chip; this makes it possible to study fundamental aspects of black holes in a laboratory on earth. The underlying research could be useful for quantum technologies and could impact future memory, logic and data storage.

Black holes in space are so dense that nothing can escape their gravitational pull once it passes a point of no return called the event horizon. Researchers have predicted a way to make such points of no return for spin waves - fluctuations that propagate in magnetic materials. This enables new studies of nanomagnetism and spintronics that could lead to more energy-efficient and sustainable information technology.

Dr. ir. Reinoud Lavrijsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Physics at TU/e. His research endeavours in the world of nanomagnetism and spintronics; his current research focuses on making the switching of nanomagnets energy efficient by combining different emerging physical principles in a single device. Lavrijsen is also passionate about teaching and was elected Teacher of the Year in 2022 by the Dutch National Students Association.
