Dick den Hertog is the founder of the Data Science for Social Good initiative at Tilburg University. He also coined the idea of the Zero Hunger Lab, which started this September at Tilburg University. This lab aims to achieve food security by using data science. The group has created special algorithms that have greatly optimized the whole supply chain of the UN World Food Programme. Humanitarian workers of the Food Program in Yemen, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Iraq are already using the algorithms to feed 15-20% more people affected by war or natural disaster with the same (and often limited) amount of money. This is just one example of how data science is changing the world of humanitarian help.

Prof. dr. ir. Dick den Hertog is professor of Analytics and Operations Research at Tilburg University, and actively focused on applying optimization in real-life situations that can contribute to a better society. He is also the scientific director of the Data Science Center Tilburg, which is part of the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS). He is scientific leader of the Tilburg University Impact Program “Creating Value from Data” and Visiting Professor at MIT (Boston, USA).

This lecture is organized by Studium Generale in cooperation with TU/e’s TGD (Technology for Global Development). TGD raises awareness about global environmental and socio-economic challenges, in order to inspire the TU/e community to create and implement innovative technological solutions.
