A promising young jazz drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are shaped, and pushed to the extreme, by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Whiplash is gripping from start to finish, culminating in a drawn-out and emotionally devastating finale.

Genre: psychological drama, music
Language English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 1 hr 46 mins (2014)

An intense and exhilarating music film, Whiplash follows a young, ambitious jazz drummer Andrew (Miles Teller) as he cashes with his demanding and ruthless teacher (a delightfully intimidating J.K. Simmons). There is not a false note in this exciting and moving film by young director Chazelle (La La Land, First Man), who presents the music world as a sports arena in which only the most fanatical survive. But where the climax in sports films is often over the top and implausible, Whiplash is convincing from start to finish.

When the instructor, known for his terrifying teaching methods, transfers Andrew into the conservatory’s top jazz ensemble, his life changes forever. What begins as passion soon spirals into obsession, as the relentless pursuit of perfection pushes Andrew to the brink of his abilities, and his sanity.

This screening is organized in collaboration with the Eindhoven University Student Jazz association Studentproof.

Awards
Simmons won an Oscar for his fantastic performance, with the film also receiving Oscars for editing and music.
