Can you stand a good dose of violence, and do you think Vikings and Norse mythology are cool, plus do you vibe on the quirky style of Robert Eggers who made The VVitch and The Lighthouse? Then you WANT to see The Northman. And on big screen at Filmhuis De Zwarte Doos, that is.
Please note: the film contains some very violent and graphic scenes.
Young Prince Amleth sees his father brutally murdered by his uncle, who then kidnaps the boy’s mother. Fleeing his island kingdom by boat, the child vows revenge. Two decades later, Amleth is a Viking berserker raiding Slavic villages, where a seer reminds him of his vow: avenge his father, save his mother, kill his uncle. Traveling on a slave ship to Iceland, Amleth infiltrates his uncle’s farm with the help of Olga, an enslaved Slavic woman — and sets out to honor his vow.
This film was made after elaborate research into the Viking culture. Director Robert Eggers did not want to make a romanticized representation of the Viking mythology and Old Norse culture. Seeing this film on the big screen at Filmhuis De Zwarte Doos will show the attention to detail and the vast and beautiful but rugged landscape.
“Robert Eggers’ brutal vision of vengeance and violence is a mesmerizingly outrageous take on the Norse myth that inspired Hamlet.” ***** The Guardian
“Reviews for The Northman unanimously proclaim that Eggers' commitment to historical accuracy is not lost in all the violence.” Syfy Wire
