Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) is a ruthless woman who, along with her assistant-lover Fran (Eiza González), is exploiting a goldmine of neglect. She has developed a profitable scam that preys upon older people – hijacking their lives and fortunes by becoming their legal state guardian, and then milking their assets for all they’re worth.
One day, Marla sets her target on what she thinks is a prime, vulnerable fish: wealthy Mrs Peterson (Dianne Wiest). Her plans seem to be working well until she runs into a vindictive Russian mafioso, played by Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister in Games of Thrones).
