From visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos comes Bugonia, an explosive psychological thriller that opens a pitch-black comic window onto our modern age of madness. Deliciously unpredictable and wildly unsettling, this conspiracy drama follows two hopeless cousins who kidnap the powerful CEO of a Big Pharma company, because they’re convinced she’s an alien.

Genre: dark comedy, satire, alien invasion
Language: English, subtitles: Dutch
Length: 1 hr 58 mins

Obsessed with conspiracy theories, two young men kidnap the influential CEO of a large company. They are convinced that she is an alien who’s planning to destroy the Earth. What follows is a hallucinatory mix of psychological thriller, black comedy, and existential horror, told in the alienating style that characterizes director Lanthimos. The film received a long-standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, along with praise for the intense performances of Emma Stone and (one of our favorite actors) Jesse Plemons, as well as for the director’s distinctive visual style.

Lanthimos, known for films such as The Favourite, The Lobster, and Poor Things (4 Oscars), once again manages to intertwine the absurd and the human in an uncomfortable but intriguing film experience.

Awards
The film received no fewer than 51 award nominations, and won four awards, among them the Green Drop Award at the Venice Film Festival.

Reviews
“Lanthimos’s hand is steady as he spins us deeper into chaos, always withholding just enough to keep us questioning what’s real.” Chicago reader

“Bugonia” isn’t merely dark; it’s a black hole. But Mr. Lanthimos’s vision is sternly compelling, and “Bugonia” is that exceptional movie that’s extremely hard to forget.” Wall Street Journal

“Bugonia is by no means Lanthimos’ best work, but it looks spectacular thanks to the sheer richness, the stinging clarity and the eye-searing colors of Ryan’s VistaVision images.” The Hollywood Reporter
