As technology advances, artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in shaping the creative process. With experts from the fields of architecture and industrial design, we will explore how AI is not only enhancing creativity, but also how its use is raising important questions about the future of the design profession and the nature of human creativity.

AI tools – from generative design algorithms to machine learning-based systems – offer designers new opportunities to push the boundaries of innovation. “AI enhances design by automating tasks, generating ideas, personalising experiences, and fostering creative collaboration." Or so says ChatGPT, which presents itself in a very favourable light here.

But as the use of AI for creative purposes accelerates, so do the ethical considerations about its role in the creative process. Questions around authorship, originality, and the potential replacement of human creativity are at the forefront of discussions. How much creative control should AI have? Can a machine truly innovate? In this discussion, we will reflect on the ethical implications of AI in engineering design and explore how to balance technological advancements with the preservation of human creativity and expression.

Bart Mispelblom Beyer is an architect and co-founder of TANGRAM architects. He recently curated an exhibition: 'ONMETELIJK BELANGRIJK - artificial intelligence and the soft values of architecture'. In this exhibition he wants to emphasize that the soft values and the human scale in architecture cannot (yet) be taken over by AI.

TU/e alumnus Luke Noothout is a designer focusing on data-driven design and AI integration at CLEVER°FRANKE. This consultancy has been experimenting with AI techniques and technologies for over a decade, using them as tools to understand how they can impact and improve their processes. With a strong background in design and technology, Luke explores how AI can improve user experience, data visualization and interactivity.

The name of the third speaker will be announced soon.

The discussion will be moderated by Jan Willem Wesselink (NPO Radio 1).

Bouwkunde Bedrijvendagen
This discussion is organized in collaboration with the Bouwkunde Bedrijvendagen -- a series of events taking place at TU/e from March 18 to 26, aimed at bringing students closer to the professional field of their interest. Visit the website of Bouwkunde Bedrijvendagen for more events, including a career market, company dinner, and masterclasses.
