Recess Relaxation: Lunch Concert Thomas Beijer

Thomas Beijer
Woensdag 22 oktober , 12:40 - 13:20
Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium
Prijs: Gratis (Student) Gratis (Anderen)

Take a break from deadlines and dive into a world where music meets art. This afternoon, pianist Thomas Beijer brings Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to life, not just through sound, but with his own animated drawings. A rare chance to experience classical music in a whole new way.

Just before exam week kicks off, Studium Generale invites you to take a well-deserved break with a lunch concert; time to clear your head and fill it with beautiful music
This time, we are thrilled to present Thomas Beijer, former winner of the prestigious Nederlandse Muziekprijs, the highest honor awarded to a Dutch classical musician by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Beijer will perform Pictures at an Exhibition, Modest Mussorgsky’s piano cycle inspired by paintings of Russian artist Viktor Hartmann. Each piece brings a painting to life through sound. And here’s the twist: Beijer, who is not only a pianist but also a talented illustrator, adds his own animated drawings, created especially for this concert, to complete the circle between music and visual art.

Pianist Thomas Beijer is a true all-rounder. He plays solo concerts as well as recitals, and chamber music concerts with musical partners such as cellist Quirine Viersen, violinist Simone Lamsma and singers Barbara Kozelj and Laetitia Gerards. Since 2019, he has also been the director of the Young Pianist Foundation.

Besides performing, Beijer is active as a composer, writer and illustrator. His novella No Jalapeños was published by Prometheus Publishers in 2017, and the drawings shown during this concert are his own creations. As he puts it himself: “Everything changes with a bunch of sea cucumbers on a big screen. Or potatoes.”
