Storytelling is a crucial part of communication. Whether you're having a conversation with friends or entering the world of science, industry or social enterprise, you will need to be able to explain to someone what you’re doing and why it matters to them. Your appeal might be to a grant committee, a boss, an investor, or the general public. But no matter who your audience is, telling a clear and engaging story will bring you closer to your goals. It’s also a huge help in most university classes.
This 2.5-hour workshop is a hands-on exploration of storytelling. We start by going over the basics, like structure, relevant detail, and emotional engagement. Then we break out into groups so you can apply these ideas to something you’re working on or would like to work on. By discussing real ideas together, we can move from abstract principles to a concrete idea of how storytelling can help get your message across in a compelling, authentic, moving and humorous way.
The workshop will be led by Elyzabeth Gorman. She is the founder of Badass Tours in Amsterdam, which is dedicated to uncovering and sharing the city’s hidden histories. Her storytelling journey began in American theater, where she wrote and researched plays about women in history. After moving to Amsterdam, she discovered a wealth of untold stories about women, Jewish communities, LGBTQ+ pioneers, and Asian, Black, and Caribbean figures, which she is now making accessible to an international audience.
