In our Philosophy and Fries workshop series, we invite a philosopher to campus to spark your thoughts while you enjoy some fried goodies. Once both your body and your brain have been fed, you and your fellow students will explore philosophical questions from a fresh perspective.
Edition 4: AI Ethics
In this workshop, philosopher Liz Groen will help you discover different ways to look at the moral concerns raised by artificial intelligence (AI). AI is rapidly becoming part of society, from healthcare and education to public policy. This technology holds great potential, but it also raises urgent social and ethical questions.
Together, we’ll explore AI ethics through thee different lenses: ethical principles, lived realities, and power structures.
First, through the lens of principles, we will look at values such as transparency, fairness, and justice, and discuss guidelines for ethical AI. Second, through the lens of lived realities, we will focus on the local context of AI, and the everyday interactions between humans and technology. Finally, through the lens of power structures, we will examine AI in its social, economic, and political context, paying attention to issues such as domination, inequality and social justice.
Liz will show how each lens comes with its own strengths, limitations, traditions, and methods. By exploring the moral concerns of bias and discrimination, sustainability, and the future of work, you will discover that how our understanding of AI ethics changes depending on the lens we choose.
About Liz Groen
Liz Groen is a PhD-researcher at iHub and the department of ethics and political philosophy at Radboud University. She is interested in new ethical challenges that arise from digitalization and artificial intelligence. In her research, Liz brings together medical ethics, research ethics, and the upcoming field "AI ethics".
