Get ready to build your very own Kalimba! This workshop offers a unique opportunity to craft a personalized version of the enchanting thumb piano. Guided by Yuri Landman, you'll explore sound, creativity, and hands-on design. A great workshop for curious minds and music enthusiasts.
The Kalimba is a modern adaptation of the instrument Mbira, a traditional instrument originating from Zimbabwe. Its global popularity grew in the late 1950s, thanks to ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey, who began commercially producing and exporting similar instruments outside of Africa.
Yuri Landman -- an instrument builder, musician, artist, cartoonist and lecturer -- will host this engaging workshop and guide you through the process of crafting your own Kalimba. Landman has designed a unique version of this African-inspired instrument. His innovative Kalimba features an integrated guitar pickup for electric amplification and a specially designed extended tail on the bridge, allowing for easy tuning adjustments—an enhancement not available with traditional Kalimbas.
