Zack Snyder 2011, 110 min.
Fantasy, action, adventure
In Sucker Punch, director Zack Snyder combines iconic elements in movie history into an absurd, shameless men’s fantasy. It’s kitsch, it’s tasteless and it’s as shallow as can be, but apart from that it’s also enjoyable.
Even more than in Snyder’s earlier movies, how Sucker Punch looks is more important than what it contains. All the audio-visual excess that we’re bombarded with is so wildly over the top and absurd that it’s hard not to just let go and enjoy it to the full. ‘There’s also a fantastic sound track, with modern and orchestral renderings of classic pop and rock numbers’ (source: Wander Theunis, Filmtotaal1).
