Technophile = sociophobe? About technology and social context, males and females, hearts and brains.
To date, the image of the prototypical technology student is that of an intelligent, nerdy, tech-loving, yet socially anxious or perhaps even isolated young male. In this lecture, professor Yvonne de Kort discusses the supposed relation between love for technology and fear for social intimacy.
Are technical brains different from social ones? Is the use of technology communication and social networking transforming social interaction? Perhaps technology is de-socializing all of us? Building on insights from neuroscience, psychology, and human-technology interaction Yvonne will discuss the importance of social cues and social context for education and technological innovation, for males and females, for nerds and people persons alike.
Yvonne was appointed full-time professor on the Contextual perspective in Human-Technology Interaction at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences in 2015.
Her inaugural lecture was titled ‘light on and in context’ and highlighted the insights she is collecting in the influence of physical contexts on human functioning. Light, a prototypical example of a contextual element that impacts mental and physical health, vitality, cognitive performance and social interaction - often outside our scope of awareness - forms the core of her current research. Professor Yvonne de Kort recently succeeded Professor Bert Meijer as chair of the Studium Generale Advisory Board.
